Excellent fishing over the Easter Holidays, plenty of carp from both lakes. Paul Wikinson who has a picture in the picture section, caught nine in one session. He also caught several on the top lake during another day stint, of which the largest was 14 lb 6 ozs.
Easter Sunday Pembrokeshire Piscatorial match was  won by Mark Close with an 18 kilo bag.

 02.04.2015
Fishing during march was very good plenty of carp caught biggest 12lbs .6oz  considering that it was mainly pleasure anglers this is not to bad. There is a match on the bottom lake on Sunday 5th April when the Pembrokeshire Piscatorials kick off their 2015 summer 6 hour  matches. Top lake open as usual.

Nice to see being caught again on a daily basis. Fish have been caught all winter, it's just now that spring and we have some warmer longer days that there are more  anglers about.
Its is lovley to see the snowdrops out , trees in bud asnd daffodilsshooting up and will soon be in flower. The birds are also singing happily , whether it is because winter is coming to and end or a courtship ritual I do no know. But it's fantastic to hear.

Sundays' Pembrokeshire Piscatorial Match went well, a silver fish only match the winner took over 6 kilos of fish , even the angler who came last had a heavier weight than their last pre Christmas match, (held at another venue). the weather started cold then turned into a lovely warm morning, early afternoon so another change to cold wet rain. Clearly these anglers had a lot to contend with but left happy. Some carp angler on the top lake caught 9 carp between them none into double figure. The last waass caught using a surface bait, not bad for January.

Mark the Manchester plumber spent a few days in the area last week. He fished it three separate days and managed to take several carp durning that time. his largest was 15 lbs + . Considering the weather had suddenly changed to cold frosty conditions this could be considered a successful trip back to South Wales.
Pembrokehsire Piscatorial club also had a very successful match on the 7th December with the winning weight of over 30 kilos. They commented that it was possibly one of the best matches they had help here this year.

17.11.2014
Some great fishing over the month, loads of carp being caught I put it down to the mild weather and the fish are still feeding up ready for the colder part of the winter which is still to come.
Pembrokeshire Piscatorial Match on the 3rd November  Mark won with a stunning 28 .3 kilos, Jonathan came second with 18 kilos and Chris third with 13 kilos. Not a bad days fishing for that the time of year.
Sean Pearce did a night session last weekend and left in the morning having caught a very  respectable  10 carp, the largest around 11lbs. What started as slow session mainly due to the down pour he endured after setting up. Once the rain cleared at around midnight he continued to have bites for the rest of the night. He also failed to land a few during the night.
Top lake going well used mainly by match or pleasure anglers although there are plenty of big lumps of carp cruising around up there.

I have missed several posts on this site although I have been regulary updating our official web site www.pembrokeshirecoarsefishing.co.uk
You can get a overview on the quality and quantity of he fishing on offer there.
The fishing  has been excellent over the last two months with numerous carp to 25lbs been caught. There are of course still regular catches of smaller carp which keep the pleasure angler happy.  Matches that have been here have also reported good bags of mixed fish with 28 kilos (over 60lb)  winning a recent match.  All anglers in the matches have aught bags that are worht  weighing in which is good sign, as it shows that at this fishery  any peg is capable of winning and not just the odd lucky peg.
Silver fish have been in abundance in both lakes with the top one maybe shading the bottom lake for size and quality.
11.08.2014
Our recent open day was a great success. Joel and the two Richard's from Wild Fishing Wales came along to help coach newcomers to angling. All participants caught fish and many of them carp for the first time.
A barbecue lunch was provided by the hosts at Llyn Carfan. National fish month provided booklets the Get Into Coarse Fishing a very useful guide to help in where to fish ,how to fish, safety , identify fish guide etc. Along with a National Fish Month Log book to keep a record off, Venue,Date,Fish Caught,Bait, Method and weather conditions on the day.

In general the fishing at Llyn Carfan has been excellent with several double figure carp caught along with Graham Kent's one that got away. He hooked but lost a monster grass carp , which took refuge in the lilly pads and took his hook. His day was not made any better when the helpful owner suggested that the first rule of fishing is to learn how to tie your hooks properly!

The recent pembrokeshire Piscatorial match produced a winning weight of over 19 kilos in a mixed bag. The runner up also had 19 kilos but was just a few grammes under.

As part of the National  Fish Month we will be holding  A Family  Open Day on Tuesday August 5th 9am to 4 pm. It is an ideal day to try coarse angling.
There will be experts and coaches on hand to offer advice and tips on what makes a successful angler.
Tackle can be provided although limited so if you do have your own bring it along.
Barbecue  lunch and tea /coffee will be provided free of charge .
To book contact the fishery 01994240819 or huw@pembrokeshirecoarsefishing.co.uk

The fishing is excellent at the moment with carp caught on a daily basis.  Today 15th July A local  Whitland angler, Mark, caught 6 carp all over 8 lbs and with the heaviest over 13lbs. David Sausse also took 3 smaller carp. Silver fish are great sport for the match angler but in the very warm weather I would avoid maggots as a bait as they tend to bring in the very small fish.
Great for kids though as they are sure to catch all day on them.
30.06.2014
June continued to fish well with only one barren spell during the hot and humid period. Thundery weather always put the carp down in the water, during such times the angler needs to adjust his tactics.
There have been reports of numerous carp to double figure and above from both lakes.  There have also been exceptional roach and rudd caught. Some specimen
size and others just quality fish in condition and colour. Local anglers  Chris and his brother Russell from St Clears took 15 carp between them on Sunday with the largest into double figures. Several other carp were also reported with the largest known to me was a 14 pound common from the top lake. Terry  staying on site also had a good day  Saturday with 15 carp out of the top lake , these were predominately  smaller match size carp of 2 to 3 lbs.

Match fisherman Mark also had a successful Sunday with an estimated 50 lbs of silvers and a further 3 carp.  Mark is hoping to repeat this performance during the forth coming Pembrokeshire Piscatorial match where nets will be allowed so he can have an accurate  weigh in.

04.06.2014
Llyn Carfan continues to fish well with a recent match on the top lake weighing in a winning weight of 10.7 kilos of silver fish. Twelve anglers participated and as is usual for this venue all caught sufficient fish to  weigh in their bags.
With the weather improving carp are now again showing  on the surface where floating baits are successful as is fishing the margins, both methods require the bait to  presented properly in order to attract the carp in. This weeks top angler Rob Ashead from Whitland taking 12 carp with the largest a 25lb  grass carp from the bottom lake. Until  the end of September 2014  Llyn Carfan  are running a weekly top angler contest. The fish of the week which must be verified and photographed will win the angler a free days fishing on their next visit. Full details and rules can be obtained from the fishery.
24/03/2014

Good weekend with plenty of fish caught. Best of them a 23 lb grass carp caught by Garry from Brynmawr who was staying for the weekend with his wife who also took several carp including a great Mirror carp and small tench. This is the first tench from the bottom lake for many many years.

A 3lb brown trout  caught at the fishery in February this year 2014.Vic is happy to pose with it in the picture section.
11.02.2014
The first Pembrokeshire Piscatorial Match  of the year was held on Sunday 26th January 2014. Eleven very hardy anglers braved a down pour while setting up which continued for the first three hours of the match, the rain eventually turned to sunshine , this was followed by cold sleet and hail by the end of the 6 hour  match . Despite the very changeable conditions  decent weights were recorded the winner new member  Brian Wesley weighed in an excellent 31 kilos (68.2 lbs)  All anglers weighed in and the lightest bag just over 4 kilos.
General fishing is good with both carp and silver fish taking on light tackle.
 08.01.2014
The warm weather is certainly making the fish active with lots of movment in the water. I feed the the fish a couple of times a week to help maintain the condition of the fish.
Anglers who have been out over have caught fish although the water is very clear and your tactics should take account of this.
 12.12.2013
Hello fellow anglers  and may I wish you all a merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
There is very little activity on the lakes at this time of year. The odd few anglers that do venture out are still taking fish and carp are very active. Although I would suggest lighter line and baits.  Silver fish are feeding in shoals again light tackle and a good attracting bait such as maggots. Move on to bigger baits and moved slightly away from the ground baited  target area for the larger fish.
I hope we will see you on the bank all again in the New Year.
20.10.2013
There has been two matches over the last couple of weeks. Both fished well with the winner taking over thirty kilos of fish each time. It is also interesting that it is rare for the same couple of pegs to produce the winner. It is usually the best angler and a bit of luck that produces the best bags at this fishery and not the favoured peg.
There have been good numbers of carp out over the last week or so nothing huge but up to double figure.
That said there has been another smashed pole when fighting the big carp.

For the first time in many years a small tench was taken from the bottom lake,  all out big one disappeared or at least are never caught so it is nice to hear of this one

01.10.2013
Fishing over the weekend was mixed with reports of good catches but also some very quite periods. A young boy and his father turned up again following a coaching session by the fishery owner. This time they had bought their own rods  and were confident enough to fish on their own.  They both took fish with fathers best   a 7 lb common carp and his son beating him with a 9lb 6 oz carp.
The top lake again produced excellent results on Sunday with small carp to 2lb and plenty of silver fish being caught.

26.09.2013
Good numbers of carp and silver fish during this late summer period. Silver fish on the top lake are simply quality fish, match tactics work best. There are still plenty of carp being caught. This is a good time to catch carp as they are active in the water and looking to feed up for the coming winter months.
The latest match was won with 15.4 kilos . the second place angler also took 15. kilos. All sixteen angler weighed in.

08.09.2013
The grass carp below was the second 20 plus fish that week , Spence  who was down from Liverpool also took a big grass carp from the middle of the bottom lake. He took it from the same peg as his son Jack had his 20 pound grass carp back in June.
There have been some excellent quality silver fish caught from both lakes during the last couple of weeks one roach was weighed at over 2lbs that one from the top lake.

"From Dan . Here is the grass carp I caught on Thursday 28th! It took me nearly an hour to bring it in after it took a piece of bread about 30ft out! It weighted 21lb 5oz! Brillant haha regards Dan"

A 3 hour coaching session for Antony and his Mum (Daisy) went well. Antony catching over a dozen silver fish on the hired rod that had been provided by the fishery. We went for simple method of a waggler float in about 3 foot of water (close into the bank.) Using both maggot and sweet corn for bait over a dozen roach and rudd were caught and Antony lost a nice carp when his line snapped.
Daisy and Antony were pleased with their short introductory session to coarse fishing and will be returning soon.

19.08.2013
There has been two amusing incidents  over the last week. I first found a guy swimming in the bottom lake, it turns out he was retrieving his rod that a carp took when he was not paying attention . The just yesterday another angler had a seriously broken pole in the same area of the bottom lake. A carp took his bait and eventually won the battle as his expensive pole shattered under pressure all three top sections were ruined. He also had to enter the water to retrieve the bits. And in fairness make sure there was not a carp caught up in the line and elastic.
Pembrokeshire Piscatorial members  fished it last week and had a good day. All took at least 10 kilos with Chris Kidd coming out on top with 26 kilos , 23 kilos of carp and 3 kilos of silver fish.
Paul an angler who visits from Morriston also had a good day last week taking over 40 carp in a 12 hour session, the largest around double figures . He used a method feeder and some 8mm carp pellets.
07.08.2013
Visiting the area from Newcastle I6 year old David  with one of the carp he caught at a recent visit. David is obviously a natural at fishing taking this carp on a rod hired at the fishery. Having listened intently to the coaching team  he then put the advice in to practice taking numerous silver fish and 3 very respectable carp.

David carp taken on hired rods

05.08.2013
Some excellent fishing over the last month with numerous carp being caught. The top catch for the month is a 38 lb grass carp caught by regular angler Sue Brumby , she used dog biscuit in the middle of the bottom lake to lure the carp in and a single biscuit to hook it.
The top lake is also fishing very well, John a Liverpool match angler using match tactics are taking over 80 x 2lb carp a day during his two week break to the area.
Sue 38 lb grass carp

31.07.2013
The open day as part of the National Fish Month proved a great success with good numbers and a variety of fish been caught. Joel  a fishing officer with the Natural Resources Wales  brought extra rods and poles to teach a variety of tactics  to the young anglers  who turned up on the day. The fishery also put on barbecue lunch with tea and coffee. No one left with out catching fish
which is a testament to this prolific fishery
.

27.07.2013
Some excellent fishing with good numbers of Carp being caught . John who is staying at one of the touring van pitches took 17 carp last Monday all over 7 lbs and up to 12 lbs.
The silver fish are still catching well with some large fish up to two pounds taken.
Sunday 28th July is out open day were we will have coaches available to give some tips and tricks to all. Refreshments will also be on hand.

23.06.2013
Fishing has been mixed with the weather so changeable that the fish seem to be going on and off the feed. Carp are being still caught in reasonable number though with fish up to 20 lb taken in the last couple of weeks. And many more lost to the lily beds. Today we had the Pembrokeshire Piscatorial's fish a match the turn out was low due to Pembrokeshire fish week where many of their members help out coaching and in various other guises around the county. The eventual winner to over 30 lbs of silver fish.

04.06.2013

12 year old JackJones  took a 20 lb 12 oz grass carp on  June 1st 2013 at Llyn Carfan Coarse fishery.
Jack who travels with his family from Liverpool  is a frequent visitor at the fishery. This is by far his best catch to date, Taken on floating dog biscuit on a very warm sunny day.
The wekend was very busy in angler numbers and fish caught Graham Barton took 12 decent carp on Saturday Morning his best being 14 lbs.

24.05.2013
Good weekend several nice carp caught and several more smashing the anglers rigs. The big carp are certainly strong fighting fish where extra care is needed when playing the fish. Many try and bully the fish in resulting in disappointment for the angler and damaged fish for us. Using floating baits is now banned anywhere in or near to the lily beds. To  many people are ignoring my advice not drop baits in amongst the lilies leaving me with no choice bu to ban floaters in those areas.
Sue Brumby caught a 19lb plus common today a fish that was in perfect condition. She was a happy bunny when she left.

21.05.2013

It has been a very funny spring the weather has being cold wet turning even colder with strong Easterly winds. Anglers have had to change tactics sometimes two or three times in a single day.
Carp have been caught in good numbers but nothing over the 15 pounds reported last month.
A recent match on the top lake was won by Jonathon Davies with 18 kilos there was however a big drop to the second place who only managed 11 kilos , all ten anglers did however weigh in.

The recent warmer weather has got the carp moving higher in the water and along the margins. There has also been some excellent large roach been caught.

11.04.2013

Sorry it's been a while since I have had time to update the report. The very cold east wind has kept angler number low but those who have ventured out have had reasonable returns. Carp are taking on the bottom and if the sun is shining are even beginning to take bread from the surface.
Mathew a regular young fisherman on the lake took a 15 lb carp on the surface this week. Personally I think it was a bit smaller but he is convinced.
Another angler claimed he had caught a sewin (sea trout)  this is not as far fetched as it seems as they do use the adjoining river a tribute of the river Taf .
Weather  is promising for the coming weekend get yhour gear out.

13.02.2013
Between snow and the persistent wet weather the fishing has been slow, well slow in angler numbers. There have been some hardy anglers taking silver fish the carp are being caught but not in the numbers we see in warmer weather. Those that are caught are normally on the bottom with feeder filled  ground bait working better than hooked pellet.
Spring must be just around the corner where with sun on the angler back  I am sure we will start to see good number of the bigger carp being caught again.
Due to it's success we are again going to continue with or offer of, fill a card with a stamp on each visit and have a free days fishing. (Adults only offer) children are already half price.

15.01.2013

Latest match was won by Jonathan Davies with 6.6 kilos of silver fish and three carp
I was not given the weight of the carp but as they average 3 kilo it would give a very respectable weight for winter fishing.

Chris Kidd was second with a heavier bag of silver fish but he failed to take any carp on the day
.
I look forward to some longer warmer days an seeing you all bank side again.

  16.12.2012

Quiet on the fishery at this time of year although there is a match going on as I write.
Pembrokeshire Piscatorials are here for their annual Christmas match. I will give a report on how they get on later date.
It is worth mentioning that after the recent frost the carp are far deeper in the water and take more persuading to feed.
I wish you all a very merry christmas and happy new year. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2013 were we hope the weather will be kinder.

PS Chris Kidd won the match with 11.6 kilos.

27.11.2012

With the weather and shorter days there has not been an lot of anglers on the lakes. Those that have ventured out have all managed to catch fish most of which have been carp. Mark from Whitland
braved the elements and cold last Saturday morning and took two nice carp to 9 lbs and lost another two. He maintained that one of the lost fish was the hardest and strongest run he had , had at the lake. His 12 lb line broke resulting in him loosing his feeder and ledger. luncheon meat in small cubes had attracted the fish in the first place.

13.11.2012

Over the last month the fishing has been a bit mixed although few have been and left without landing fish.
A recent silver fish match with Pembroke Piscatorial's resulted in Chris Kidd taking the spoils with approximately 9 kilos. Others were close behind and all contestants weighed in.
Carp have been caught on a regular basis with the best at 18 lbs.
In the last few days a match angler from Oxford visiting the area was delighted to take good mixed bags on the three days of his visit ( He is here again today 13/11/2012).

An interesting story from October.
Two guys turn up early one morning. It was blowing a gale and they sat facing the wind at the far end of the bottom lake. When chatting to them I did advise that they move up the disabled area where there was more shelter.
They left at lunch time telling a guy who just turned up that they had not had a bite and were of to another fishery.

This guy fished on the peg where I had advised them too. He took eleven carp 8 lb and 18 lbs. There must be a moral there somewhere !
P. S The Oxford angler mentioned earlier who today is on the top lake has just informed me that he is delighted not only with the small carp (to a pound) which I had advised him to fish for but the size and quality of the roach.

24.09.2012

September has been a mixed month on the lakes. Some anglers are struggling to catch while others are taking numerous fish.
Terry had another grass carp of 23 lbs on a floating dog biscuit.
The cooler weather has put the fish deeper in the water with less activity on the surface.
The silver fish are plentiful with bigger roach taking larger baits on light tackle.

02.09.2012
The large grass carp are like buses, you wait ages then three come along at once. Terry took a 33 lb. 3 oz last Sunday this is the third 30 lb plus we have had over the last month. What made this more remarkable is that Terry took it on a floating dog biscuit when the other end of the lake was being used for a Pembrokeshire Piscatorial match. His one carp would have given him second place as Jonathan Davies netted over 17 kilos of fish to win the match. September is a great time to catch carp with the lakes being quieter it is also the ideal time to get those last few evenings before the nights draw in.

30.08.2012

The fishery was recently the location for a spoof advert for a you tube clip, Big Daz's coarse fishery. It will bring a smile to your face if nothing else.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBdKUHwJjmM

or simply do a search on google for big daz coarse fishery.

On the angling front we have had several catches reported including a 30 lb grass carp taken by Trisha using a floating dog biscuit. The grass carp are usually caught on or just under the surface og the water.

Micheal and Ryan two teenage anglers from Pembrokeshire had an excellent 72 hour stint taking 150 carp between them and failing to land many more. using a mixture of pellet and luncheon meat ( canned meat) they varied tactics between the surface and ledgering with equally good results. Their sister who day fished also took her first carp an 8 lb common carp.

Ryan also took this lovley eel from the bottom lake ledgering luncheon meat.
Eel
This eel was caught at pembrokeshire Coarse Fishery by Ryan
Following Garry Brumby's 39.9 gras carp as shown on the home page. Trish also had a good day the following Saturday with a 30lb grass carp as her best carp. She took it on the surface using dog biscuit as the grass carp are always taken on or very near to the surface.
Top lake is now giving great results for match fishermen with numerous small carp to 1 lb being taken. There are also some very large carp in there for those who bait heavier.

06.08.2012
Plenty of fish being caught at both lakes. The top has an abundance of small carp to a pound that match fishermen are enjoying with some reporting that they have taken over a hundred in a session. Carl Gaskel from Liverpool an angler who has fished Llyn Caran for over 20 years during his annual holiday was one angler who enjoyed his time on the top lake. Using a pole to take the smaller carp on bacon, sweetcorn, and meat. He would switch to rod for the larger carp his largest being 15 lbs.
He commented that after visitng other fisheries in Pembrokeshire this was certainly by a long shot the best.

Sue and Garry Brumby have also had a good week with Sues best fish so far an eighteen pound common carp , taken from the bottom lake with bread.

30.06.2012

The Fishy Family Fun Day in Pembrokeshire In celebration of Pembrokeshire’s Fish Week, FBM Holidays was a very successful day, where first time anglers and more seasoned anglers enjoyed the free tuition expertly provided by a Welsh Federation Angling Coach and one of the Environment Agencies top angling participation officers.
Raffle prizes were won by two regular anglers. Free tea coffee and snacks were provided by the fishery.

Some notable catches of the week.
Sue with 6 carp over 10 lbs.
Roddri with his first ever carp at 8 lbs.
Joel 1.5 lb roach
John 14 lb carp and the raffle prize.

The top lake is now producing large bags of small carp with the bigger carp also showing well. This is really worth giving it a try.

PFAC coaches also gave a one of lesson to 15 London School children at the venue this week. Every single pupil caught fish, predominantly silver fish, but a 3 lb eel and two carp around 9 lb were also landed in the two hour session.

11.06.2012
On June 30th we are holding a fun day at the fishery to celebrate Pembrokeshire Fish week and our new access and habitat improvements. We will be offering discounted fishing some fun games for prizes tour of the site and most important tips on how to fish the water. Fun starts at 10 am For more information please give me a call on 01994 240819.This event is again sponsored by FBM Holidays

Liz who visits with her caravan took her largest fish to date lst weekend a 10.4 lb common carp, she puts it down to her new pink rod!

Mark Brummett and
Scott Howard had a fantastic days fishing Sunday with over 27 carp caught between them. They fished both lakes using a variety of methods if you average their fish at 8lbs each this gives a total bag of 216 lbs.

The top lake is fishing well with the recently stocked carp taking small baits giving good sport on fish between half and one pound.
The bottom lake needs bigger bait if you wish to avoid the smaller silver fish. I would not recommend maggots at this time of year. Peter Jordan who fishes for the silvers had one of his best days fishing during some inclement weather last Thursday.

22.05.2012
Graham Kent caught an eighteen pounder from the bottom lake last Saturday. He was getting a little agitated as he had been broken three times during the morning so this common carp made up for his earlier disappointment.

Dave Rook took another grass carp of over 20lbs this is the second reported this year.

The new stock of small carp are being caught on the top lake although lighter tackle is needed to tempted them

03.05.2012
Great fishing at over the last month. Best catches was a 5 common carp by Graham Barton. He fished with a single ledger rod with a variety of baits. His largest was just over 11lbs. Silver fish are plentiful taking lighter baits such as maggots and punched bread.

17.04.2012
After the warm weather we are back to winter. This however has not stopped the carp taking with good catches on both lakes.  Kilshy from Killgetty took a 21lb grass carp during Easter week. Taken from the bottom lake with bread crust. It is very early in the year for the grass carp to be caught as I normally see them late summer early September.  Our top lake has recently been restocked with small carp which will be ready to catch during the summer.
20.03.2012
Both lakes fishing exceptionally well at the moment the warmer weather and increase in anglers has certainly got the carp moving. Barry James and his son in law recently took over a dozen carp in a day session on the bottom lake. Using a targeted feeding method they took carp to 13 lbs with the smallest 7 lb all from the shallow end of the bottom lake.
24.02.2012

Although anglers are scarce those who have ventured out are being rewarded. Spence and his sons visiting for a day and night  over the half term from Liverpool took over 5 double figure carp between them. The top lake is also producing carp in excellent condition .

Both lakes are cold and clear so lighter tackle is a must  as is smaller baits.  A few maggots to attract is worth while leading on to pellets and punched luncheon meat.

27.01.2012
Very few anglers about to give an acuarate report. Those who have ventured out have been silver fish men. Maggots and pellets are certainly attracting plenty of fish. larger roach have also been taken using heavier baits after feeding the swim.

14.01.2012
Over the festive period we had a few hardy anglers venture out and enjoy the mild weather. The fishing has been very good with several carp up to 10 lbs been taken.
The Pembrokeshire Piscatorial's held their first match of the year on the 8th of January
, a silver fish match on a very warm sunny day. During the morning all participants were catching at a steady pace. Unfortunately I had to leave before the end so cannot give you any final weights or who the winner was. I will post it as soon as I have the results sent to me.

The first night fisherman of the year came out on Friday 11th January, he had a fairly quiet night fishing for carp but did manage to loose on landing it the first during the night. He took another two carp in the morning one at 10 lbs and the other at 8 lbs. Not bad considering that it was a heavy frost and the water was considerable cooler than of late.

Mick from Pembroke Dock took four carp in the first hour on New Years Eve. Taken on ledger on the deepest end of the bottom lake. Silver fish are also ben caught readily if you spend some time to set up correctly. This time of year it is always worth plumbing the depth of your peg and carrying a range of baits, maggots and some ground feed for loose feed or a feeder will bring results.
.
22.12.2011
The last match of the year took place on the 18th December 2011. A cold but bright day with very clear water. The winning angler was Steve Harrison who took just under 7 kilos of silver fish closely followed by Chris Kidd and Peter Jordan. All anglers weighed in with silver fish with no carp caught during the match.

I wish you all a very merrry Christmas and Happy New Year I look forward to welcoming you to the fishery again in 2012.

Mac for Aberdare trie his luck last week end ansd caught a couple of nice carp over 10lb. He fished the shallow end of the bottom lake using a feeder with a very short leader line to the hook bait.
Other than that the angler numbers have dropped off as is normal at this time of year so very little to report. Next match is in December when the Pembrokeshire Piscatorials will be at the fishery.

Llyn Carfan is fishing. The number of anglers are getting fewer as the nights draw in but those who do venture out are being well rewarded.
The lakes have  fished well over the last couple of weeks, carp are taking well on the bottom lake. On the first day of her week stay Sue Brumby took 11 carp to 9 lbs. Even with the mixed weather the carp showed up well for the rest of the week right up until the week end where Matt from Aberdare took 4 carp over 10 pounds at the shallow end in wet windy conditions.
A recent Pembrokeshire Piscatorial silver fish match also produced carp from single maggots. The eventual winner took it on all silver fish with a weight of 11.3 kilos.

With warm weather predicted for next week it will be an ideal time to try your luck catching grass carp. cool nights and warm days are ideal conditions for taking them.

Sorry due to work commitments I have missed some updates.
Llyn Carfan bottom lake has produced another three of the large grass carp during August. One pictured below another was taken by Graham Kent it weighed in at 23 lb 12 oz. The other two were slightly smaller at around 22 lb. The second one taken during a Pembrokeshire Piscatorial match when they newest and youngest member Reece took it on a pole. Update to above. I was given the wrong information it was infact Jonathan Davies who took the grass carp in the match. He also took several more carp to comfortably win the match.
The top lake has also produced a smaller grass carp at 16 lbs plus some commons to 14 lb.

Neil Roberts 22lb Grass Carp
28.08.2011
August has proved to be a good month for the grass carp. Following the one mentioned in my previous post another two of similar size have been landed. Garry brumby took a 24 lb fish in the margins with floating bait last Monday and Graham Kent took a 23 .lb .12 oz fish from the middle of the bottom lake on the Saturday. Graham also took another 3 common carp all over 10 lbs the same morning.
Silver fish are plentiful with maggots taking any number for younger anglers. If you want larger quality roach you need to increase the bait size where punched luncheon meat or similar are taking fish to well over a pound in weight.

12/08/2011
Llyn Carfan fishing is very good with good bags of silver fish being caught with some roach to specimen size being taken on floating dog biscuit.
Carp are continuing to take baits closer to the margins with pellet and meat being favourite baits. A grass carp of 22 lb was recently caught . Neil Roberts from Pembroke Dock caught it on a floating bait.

27.07.2011
Both lakes continue to fish well. Night fishing on the bottom lake proved very successful for a visiting angler from England. Camping with his family he took advantage of being able to pitch along side the bottom lake to take several carp to 11 pounds . As he decided to fish close to the lilies he also failed to land several more.
The quality and size of the roach have also been commented on this summer.

17.07.2011
The fishing at Llyn Carfan is great again at the moment. The recent thunder storm seems to have made the carp active again although I think we could still do with a period of warm sunny weather to really bring them on.

The top lake continues to be slower than usual due to the Goosander vi sting last winter. They cleared almost all of the smaller silver fish although this might not be a bad thing as it will bring on the carp and bigger Roach and Rudd.

Camping and touring van pitches available for the summer months.

The final of the FBM Holidays coarse fishing competition took place at Llyn Carfan on Sunday 3rd July 2011.
A bright and sunny day greeted the 15 anglers who had won through via the previous rounds during June. After tea, coffee, bacon and sausage rolls the draw for pegs took place at 8.30 am. With an hour a half to get to their pegs and set up the contest started at 10 AM. Some concentrated on the fisheries big carp while others went for silver fish. It was interested to see how tactics changed during the day where the silver fish brigade tried for the carp having seen the angler on next peg or opposite take one or two. Obviously thinking they needed to also catch some to increase their weights. Where as others who started with the carp and were finding the sunny conditions a challenge changed tact to try and catch roach and rudd . At the final whistle Ian Heaps dropped a good size carp and had a tense wait to see if That was the fish that lost him the competition.
The weigh in showed the catches were indeed very close with pegs two to five having less than a kilo separating them.
The eventual winner of £400.00 and the LLyn Carfan Pembrokeshire Fish week trophy was ex world champion Mr Ian Heaps with a weight 11.3 kg Winning (Ian also has his own school of angling in Pembrokeshire).
2nd £200.00 place went to last years winner Major Chris Kidd winning .
Third and £100.00 went to Kevin Abbot with 10 kg Winning £100.00.
Fourth was Jonathan Davies with 9.9 kg . ( Johnathan was second last year.)
LLyn Carfan wishes to thank FBM Holidays and Pembrokeshire fish week for their continuing support for the competition.

30.03.2011.
The three hour eveing heat was won by Colin Bates 3.6 kg Clin is joined in the fianl by Paul Bassett .
26.06.2011
The fourth heat of the FBM Coarse Fishing Championship to place at Llyn Carfan today. The fishing was tough and most anglers decided that they would fish for carp only. Although there was plenty of carp movement on the water they were not taking any of the baits offered. Kevin Abbot had decided to mix his bag and it proved to be worth while landing 6.5 kilos. this proved enough on the day to win the heat. He will now go through to Sundays final along with Chris Watts and James young who came second and third respectively.

LLyn Carfan will be holding a final 3 hour heat on Thursday evening, peg draw at 5 pm and start fishing at 6 pm. Call 01994240819 to enter £750.00 of cash prizes split between the first four. £400.00 £200.00, £100.00. £50.00.

19.06.2011
The third heat of the FBM Coarse Fishing Championship to place at Llyn Carfan today. Ian heaps took top weight with 16.5 kilos with a mixed bag of silvers and carp. He drew peg 3 where he soon set about taking roach and rudd as the 5 hour match progressed Ian started to land some carp taking his very last carp as the end of match whistle sounded. As per the rules he was allowed 15 minutes to land the fish. He learned to his cost earlier that these carp cannot be bullied and used this extra time to his advantage quietly playing the fish in. That final fish gave Ian first place on the day just ahead of Jonathan Davies on 14.4 kilos and Chris Harrison on 12.2 kilos. All three had failed to progress in earlier heats, but are no through to the final on July 3rd.
There is only one more heat next Sunday 26.06.2011. Although it has been suggested that we add an extra evening heat in mid week around June 30th to give some of the best runners up in the heats a chance to fish of for a place in the final. If there is enough interest this may happen.

12.06.2011
The second heat of the FBM Coarse Fishing Championship today. Kevin Roberts who took 11.2 kilos mixed bag off peg 5 to win the heat. He will go through to the final along with Peter Edwards and Steve Harrison who tied for second place on 10.5 kilos. Steve's bag was all silver fish. the match was fished in on a day where autumn had returned to Pembrokeshire very heavy rain
with a cold winds.
Fish of the week Vic who took a 17.2lb mirror carp from the bottom lake on Wednesday. Taken with a pole and waggler using the old favourite luncheon meat, fished over the area where Vic had previously been fishing pellets.

07.06.2011
Sunday's opening heat of the FBM Coarse Fishing Championship held at Llyn Carfan.
The 5 hour match proved to be challenging with some match fishermen of note struggling to come to terms with the depth and layout of the water.
The day started with the hosts providing tea coffee and bacon and sausage baps ( at a very reasonable price). the peg draw took place at 8.30 am which allowed the competitors and hour and a half to set up on their pegs for the 5 hour match.
A number of the anglers had been used to fishing matches on easier waters which have been specifically designed for matches. However at Pembrokeshire coarse fishery where the original carp were stocked over 25 years ago and go up to 30 pounds. It's natural breeding cycle has produced numerous fish but they are also very cautious fish.On days like this a change of tactics are needed which is exactly what the eventual winner Chris Kidd did to produce his 17.8 kilo bag of carp, Mark Close was runner up with a fine bag of silver fish at 7.7 kilo, third was Tim Peters with a mixed bag at 5.2 kilos.
All three will now compete the final for the £750 prize money on offer Sunday July 3rd.

There are still places available for the next three heats book now!

02.06.2011
At last it the road is open from the Whitland end. Also the up grading access work at the fishery has been completed .
The fishing is very good with the carp being taken on a regular bases. They are also back on top which is a good sign. Barry James had a good day on the roach from the top lake recently. Good sizes but he did have to work quite hard to attract then in to his swim.
The £750.00 FBM coarse fishing championship starts on Sunday June 5th at 9am, peg draw 8.15am
I runs every Sunday until the final on July 5th.

27.05.2011
Work is now complete and it's angling as usual.

The council road works have also been suspended over the bank holiday and the road to us is opened from both Tavernspite and Whitland.

Take note though that on Tuesday 31st the road in from Whitland will be closed but opened from Tavernspite end.

On Wednesday 1st June onward for the rest of the week it will be open from Whitland end and closed from Tavernspite. It is scheduled to be finished by the end of that week when road will be open as usual.

25.05.11
To enable us to complete our access for all upgrade. We will be having the surface of the parking areas and access paths to and from the office, toilets and disabled pegs finished with tarmac on Thursday and possibly Friday of this week . (26.05.2011 and 27.05.2011). To ensure the safety of all our anglers, during this time this area will be closed to the public while the contractors carry out their work.
All anglers will need to park at the top lake. The bottom lake will only be open at the far bank and will only be reached by walking back from the top lake.
I am sorry for the inconvenience.

The carp have taken to deeper water again during the last week or so. I put this down to heavy weather which always puts fish down in the water.
It is difficult to give an accurate report on how it's fishing as angler numbers have dropped off since the bank holiday. Those who have fished some are catching on a regular basis others have drawn blanks on the carp. Silver fish on the bottom lake are taking readily and to a very decent size.
Funny story of the week when an angler caught a very big eel , he claimed it was over 2 feet in length.
It gave him such a shock that he felt he had to come over to the bungalow and rep rot it to me. He could not stress enough how glad he was that it fell of the hook and he did not have to handle it.

30.04.2011
Another good week on both lakes.
A party of five who fish Llyn Carfan for a week at the end of April every year, were delighted with both the fine weather and quantity of fish caught. Each day they all landed many carp of various sizes to 13 lb. They had an added bonus this year by having an early breakfast prepared for them at the fishery.
Mr J Sam took a 20 lb grass carp from the bottom lake on Friday evening this was his best effort for the night. Mr Sam and his father are on a weekend stint at the fishery. Judging by they way its gone up to now (sat dinner time) they are going to have a great weekend.
Sue Brumby staying with her family at the fishery in her touring caravan continues to catch carp here on a regular basis. This week she decided to fish the top lake where previously had failed to catch carp. This week however on the first session she took 4 to nine pounds.

23.04.2011
Carp are plentiful with good numbers being landed from both lakes although the top lake is a little more challenging. This could also be down to less anglers fishing there which distorts the catch numbers. That said there are carp being caught up there on a daily basis. Its the silver fish that are not showing.
The bottom lake continues to give great pleasure to the angler with both carp and silver fish showing up well. Roach in particular have been landed to over 2 lb 8 oz as reported last week. Since then I have several reports of top quality roach landed.
The carp have showed up well of the top and in deeper water with ledgers or swim  feeders. The margins with a float rod should not be over looked

13.04.2011
The warm weather has continued as has the good catches. Carp are showing up well on both lakes. Brian took a 15 lb carp last Saturday morning. I believe it was on pellet on the bottom at least that was the method he was using when I spoke to him. Barry Avery also had several good days on bottom lake taking a variety of fish with a very light pole. He took care to plumb the depth carefully and while using a light float and small pellet took great bags of roach up to 2 and a quarter pound. he also landed several small carp using the same method.
The top lake is producing carp but struggling on the roach and rudd. I put this down to the visiting Gooseanders during he winter.  Although on the positve side carp fisheren should benefit from the smaller roach being taken.
31.03.2011
Carp are being caught on a regular basis although they do tend to feed in different locations depending on the time of day and weather. I know its an obvious fact ! However the cold mornings have been giving way to very warm sunshine and then getting cold again in the evenings. The carp have been feeding on the bottom  during the mornings and then moving up in the water as the sun gets warm. The evenings see then nearer the margins.
The top lake which is a degree or two colder has brought mixed results. One angler found that he could not entice the roach and rudd on Sunday. But later in the day he did produce 11 carp from 2 to 8 lbs. He was using light tackle and tactics with silver fish in mind.

23.03.2011.
The warm weather has certainly brought the carp to the surface. You now seeing them actively seeking feed in all areas of both lakes.  In the last week anglers have been reporting catches up to a dozen fish each. John a regular from Whitland took advantage of not having his son with him to take a dozen fish. Using the top with bread as his main tactic, his biggest was just over 10 lbs.

I will be banning floating baits on the areas around the Lilly pads this summer. This is because even though I have told people to keep the floaters at least 2 metres away they continue to drop the bait in amongst the lilies resulting in damaged fish and lilies beds.

Silver fish are also showing well with good bags being reported.
John with one of his dozen carp

15.03.2011
aled with carp
15.03.2011
Some good fishing lately with plenty of carp being caught.
Dave and Vince had a cracking night session taking 9 carp to 11lbs. They were having a night day session as practise before their week long trip to France.
Aled and Liam also enjoyed a couple of hours fishing where Aled caught a carp his first since he was very young. Maybe it will get him back into fishing.

06.03.2011
The recent sunny days have got the fish moving in  the water. Carp have been basking in the warm afternoon sun. Anglers are taking fish from the bottom with the carp caught on bread paste and luncheon meat. Silver fish are plentiful using maggots and sweetcorn.

21.02.2011
The weekend proved productive for the anglers who ventured out. A Liverpool family who used the electric hook ups to  stayed over the weekend. Had many carp, some to double figures. John a local angler on his first visit this year took five carp up to 7 pounds. They were taken on bread on the bottom. With the weather warming up now is a good time to dust off your tackle and give it a try.

16.02.2011
Matches on the bottom lake for the past two Sunday's.  Good quality silver fish have been caught on both occasions. With every angler weighing in. Top weight was 7.8 kilos. I have not received last Sundays match results.
The warmer weather means that carps have started to move more in the water although I would suggest trying the deeper sections for larger fish.

16.01.2011

Dave and Vince had a very successful overnight stint during the last week. Taking 14 carp between them the heaviest weighing in at just over 10 lb.  They also took a few nice roach with a float rod.
Last Sunday Pembrokeshire Piscatorial Match went well considering we had a frost over night, enough to put a very thin layer of ice over the bottom lake. It was slow during the morning but picked up towards the afternoon. Winning weight was 6.2 kilos in the silver fish only match. Carp were caught but not weighed.

07.01.2010
Both lakes are now fishing after the thaw. I was surprised to see carp taking floating bread on the top lake. Dan and his friend managed to land three carp using this method. There is also signs of smaller sliver fish topping in the water.

The bottom lake has taken longer for the fish to start moving about. A pair of  anglers over the New Year failed to catch anything. But the next day fish were again being caught including carp. Silver fish were plentiful if using the correct tactics.

26.10.2010
In twenty five years I have never seen the lakes frozen
for such a long period. In fact I was able to walk over the bottom lake yesterday.  Obviously there has been no fishing during all of December.
Sadly due to VAT increase in the New Year we are left with no choice but to increase our price. There will now be an extra 50p added to day ticket prices.

I wish you all a very Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you in 2011.

30.11.2010

Not much to report as both lakes are currently frozen over. There is some hope that by early next week there will be a thaw.

Dates for next years Pembrokeshire fish week and  FBM championship have now been agreed. The event will be held again at Pembrokeshire Coarse fishery. However the format will change slightly. The heats will now be help on a Sunday starting on the 5th June 2011 and will be held each Sunday the last heat being the 26th June. The final will be held on Sunday 3rd of July 2011.
It is possible we might add one evening heat during the week possibly on the Thursday 30th June.

Prize fund will again be  £750.00

Sorry for the late update but I have been ill for the last month or so.  Stress of running a fishery!
Even in October into early November there are carp being taken with some decent fish caught lately.  The catches included a 14.5 common carp from the bottom lake.  A couple of anglers last week took 9 carp a piece up to 11 pound. These were on two separate days.
Carp are also being caught on the top lake with John Ashead taking a 13.5 common last Saturday.
There have also been some quality roach landed recently mainly on larger carp baits.

Sundays Pembrokeshire Piscatorial match was won by Jonathan davies with 11.5 kilos.

Thsi fantastic roach was caught by Graham Kent in August 2010

With visitor numbers dropping off as the summer comes to end the lakes are quieter than usual. The water is also cooling resulting in the carp being taken from deeper water.  The top lake  is more challenging although those who do venture up there are reporting good catches.
This is also the time of year where big carp, are normally landed, I put this down to the fish starting to feed up ready for winter. Also that there is less natural feed in the water so they tend to seek out artificial baits

22.08.2010
25lb grass carp
LLyn Carfan continues to fish well with a number of carp to double figures being caught. Mr Adshead took pride of place over the last week with 25 lb grass carp. He took it off the top and close in with  slow sinking bait. having previously struggled to land the fish he caught the grass carp certainly made his week.
I had a report of a 4 lb tench from the top lake the first I have heard of this year. Although as most people fish for carp on that lake it is not surprising that the tench get missed.
We are also getting a number of very large roach and rudd caught, mostly on carp baits although those who choose to pleasure fish for the silver fish are also reporting excellent catches.
We still have a couple of spaces for touring caravans over the August bank holiday.

31.07.2010

Very excited Sue at Pembrokeshire Coarse fishery

Both lakes continue to fish well with numerous carp  between 4 lb  to 9 lb. The larger fish are not being landed as often although we do have many reports of the one that got away.
Graham our regular Saturday morning angler was very pleased with the 14.3oz common he took this morning.
Best results of the week must go to a father and son team who were in the area on holiday they  managed 27 carp between them on the bottom lake.
Most excited angler of the week must go to Sue who has a caravan on one of our pitches. She took a eleven pound common on dog biscuit . I have placed a picture in the picture gallery but you would have thought she could look a little more pleased about it!

Roach and Rudd are also taking well with good size fish being reported.

21.07.2010

Very good fishing at the moment, A carmarthen angler took 15 carp in a 6 hour session mainly on a feeder rod, although a waggler was used mid session.
Windy conditions recently has made surface fishing difficult but those who persevered have taken some very good quality carp.
Top lake has been quieter, with less anglers using it. It is difficult to give an accurate reflection on how its fishing. There are plenty of carp showing as I walk around.

 Match Details

This weeks FBM championship matches have gone well with the top weight 28.10oz from peg 11 on the bottom lake. It  was no surprise as Jonathan (aka Rimmer) had been out practising and setting up rigs the weekend before!
Tuesday evening fished well with a joint winners on peg 6 and 5 Dave taking 23lbs on 6  and Chris Harrison on 5 equalling his weight exactly.

Friday nights match proved much more challenging as it was on the top lake, the  nights winner was Chris Kidd with 10.8ozs.  With some anglers failing to catch anything. I cannot give any sensible explanation for this as the top lake is known for it's big bags of quality roach.

13 anglers will now battle it out for Saturday's final. This will be on the bottom lake where the lucky winner will take home a huge cheque of £400.00  2nd 3rd and fourth will share a further £350.00

Saturday's Final
The conclusion of the  FBM Holiday championship which was run as part of the Pembrokeshire Fish week took place on the 3rd of July 2010.

As one of the finalists were unable to make it 12 anglers drew for pegs at 9.30am. This allowed one hour to set up on their pegs before the 10.30 start of the five hour match.
We had deliberately kept the  pegs at near double spacing for this competition. This would allow the  anglers a chance to fish for the bigger carp without worrying about the fish running through the  next peg.
After a brisk start with the first carp actually caught within a minute of the whistle. All anglers continued to catch all day using various methods from poles to rods with feeders on. It was interesting to watch the anglers change tactics as the hours passed. When the roach further out went quite  pre fed margins were tried for that elusive large carp. Jonathan Davies used this to great effect when he took the biggest carp of the day the only double figure fish taken. It certainly helped him to the runners up spot.
Peg six took the top prize on Saturday and had produced the winner on Tuesday evening. Interesting then that on Monday it blanked completely!

1st Prize £400.00 plus a trophy  went to Chris Kidd from Hook who drew peg 6 he caught 34.13oz a mixed bag of carp and silver fish.  Chris also won Friday evening match  with 10lb  8oz bag from the top lake.

Second place and £200.00 went to Jonathan Davies from Cross Hands on peg 7 with 18lb 6oz he took home £200.00. Jonathan won the Monday night match bottom lake on peg 11
Third prize £100.00 went to Dave Allen on peg 12 with 18lb 1oz. Dave qualified on Tuesday evening with a joint top weight of 23lbs from Peg 6
Fourth prize £50.00 went to Mike Hanson from Hinckley. Mike and his son Lee both qualified from the Friday night match.

Excellent fishing with both lakes giving good returns.
Susan an angler who has a caravan on out touring pitch took 11 carp during Sunday afternoon. The biggest was being 8 lbs.
Dave from Liverpool who took advantage of the fine weather to spend the last three  days here caught carp continuously during his stay. His boys also had a fantastic time  with the youngest an 8 year old taking a nine pound carp as his first ever fish.
Various methods are working  pellet to the margins and floating baits being the favourite at the moment.
Beware of using  maggots at this time of year as it can lead to being pestered by small roach. That said feeding a swim and then fishing with heavier bait a little further away can bring some good results.
We have the FBM holiday coarse championship here this week. This is part of the Pembrokeshire Fish week programme, there are still places available if you wish to try it. Total prize money £750.00.
Contact me on 01994240819 if you wish to book in. More details on www.wwpf.pembrokeshiretourism.net

10.06.2010.
Carp are feeding well at the moment. This is not unusual at this time of the year after spawning.  Mr G Downey from Maesteg caught twenty two in a single day. Most were caught on dog biscuit others including mirror carp were caught on a ledger rod. His largest was 10lb 11oz the smallest around 5 lb. if these had been weighed in even at an average of 5lbs a fish in would mean a bag of well over a 100lbs.
Large roaches are also showing well with several top quality roach caught over the last week or so.

05.06.2010
Excellent fishing over the bank holiday week. Carp and large roach are being caught in good numbers. Although a word of warning if you use maggots the small roach and rudd will invade your swim, particularly if the carps are basking and not showing any interest in feeding. Normally the carp bully the smaller fish as the evening sets in resulting in good quality carp being caught.

24.05.2010
The very hot weather has certainly brought the carp to the surface, now this can be a good or bad thing. Good thing when they are basking the angler can see the number and quality of the carp, bad thing sometimes they just do not want to feed and they can led to frustration from the angler!
Usually as the evening comes in the carp will then happily feed and you will find them sucking hard around the margins.  Surface baits also come into their own at this time of year.
Llyn Carfan have not banned surface baits (except for matches) but will not allow any baits to be placed in amongst or within two meters of any of the lily pads situated in three or four areas of the lakes. This is simply because some anglers will use braid ( banned as a hook length here) or very heavy line and try and drag the carp out of the lilies with no consideration for the well fare of the fish!  This ban also applies to dropping bait in amongst the carp when spawning where they will crash around in  the margins.  Common sense should tell you that this is not a suitable place to try and catch them!
Top Lake LLyn Carfan
Why not try camping at Llyn Carfan that way you can take advantage of early morning and late evening to tempt the bigger carp.

10.05.2010
Although the weather is chilly some good catches have been reported. Carp are showing frequently from both lakes 10mm  pellet on a ledger seems to be one of the best baits at the moment.
Pole fishing is also showing very good results with large bags of roach and rudd being caught.
We are now stocking a variety of baits for those of you who do not want to make that journey to the tackle shops.

26.04.10
Fishing well on both lakes carp have been taken of  the top with one lucky angler taking 25 in day. Graham Barton took a number of top quality roach and rudd from the bottom lake on Saturday morning. Fishing with a light tackle using pellet and a small amount of ground mix purchased at the fishery.
With the warm days now is an ideal time to visit and test the water for yourself.

6.04.2010
Fishing over the last week has been very good. Although the return of the colder weather did slow the carp catches. That said anglers who varied their methods still caught carp to 10 lbs.
Steve and William who on Sunday used a keep net on the top lake (please note this was at my request to check stock) Landed over 40 lbs of fish mainly roach but included three carp the at 1.5 lb 3.8 lb and one at 10 lbs. The condition of the roach were excellent and the biggest weighed in at 1.6 lbs. All the fish were caught on caster and the odd maggot. They fed maggot and small pellet as a ground bait adding small amounts of sweet corn at regular intervals. Both failed to catch a fish with the sweet corn on the hook but that said as they were taking fish consistently with caster they did not persevere to much.

As usual the bottom lake also provided good sport over the Easter week end
.

Today's Piscatorial match was won by Peter Jordan with a 7.5 kilo bag all silver fish. The quality of the roach was exceptional. Although he had a slow start once Peter had the fish feeding it was a good few hours of constant catching .Carp were few and far between today but have been showing well over the previous week. Top lake had no anglers on it today but as I walked around there were plenty of signs of carp feeding. Some loose bread on  the surface also attracted plenty of smaller sliver fish to feed.

Top Lake common carp

Andrew a regular at the fishery informs me that on Sunday the  14th March he took 11 carp from the top lake all between 5 and 9 pounds. This Sunday he moved to the bottom lake where again  he caught 9 carp to 8lb. His favoured method was a pva stick bag filled with various corn and a few maggots on a ledger rod.
Mathew from Saundersfoot also had a great day with 7 carp all taken on the surface from the shallow end of the bottom lake.

Advance Notice
This year in June Llyn Carfan will be hosting the Pembrokeshire Fish week Competition. Where the main sponsors area FBM Holidays prize money over £600.00
Starting on the 28th June 10. There will be 3 hour heats each evening where the winner and runner up will go through to fish the final in a 6 hour match on the Saturday 3rd July 2010.
Email me for more information.
 llyncarfan@aol.com

I will also be limiting the touring van spaces for competitors only for that week
.

Good week fishing. A group from Liverpool who stayed the weekend in their touring van had several carp, around 11 in total using ledgers. The biggest was around 12 pounds.

The Pembrokeshire Piscatorial Match seemed to be catching well during the sunny morning. I saw at least 3 carp and several very tidy roach caught  durng the first hour of the match. II was not present at the weigh in so cannot give you the final weights or winners. Hopefuly someone will email them through to me.

This week had been very quiet with hardly any anglers venturing out.  The fish are certainly moving around the waters I have even spotted a few large carp  stirring up the water in the deeper edges.  a handful of pellets brought activity with the silver fish.
Last week I went along to the Pembrokeshire Federation of Angling Coaches meeting at Haverfordwest.  Whilst there I met Peter Jordan who had fished the previous Sunday's match at Llyn Carfan. He told me he was very impressed with the size and quality  of some of the roach caught at the match.

If anyone is interested  become an affiliated angling coach in any of the angling disciplines they should contact Mr Roger Pratt on 01437 767424 or 07770883716

First match of the year for the Pembrokeshire Piscatorials.  After a slow start on a freeezing morning things did pick up. Brett eventually one the match with 5.9 kilos followed by Peter Jordan on 5.1 kilos Peter Tadman comng third with 4 .43 kilos. The bags were a mix of silver fish and small carp.

16.01.10

The lakes have thawed. Naturally the water will be very cold which will put he fish in deeper waters.  The silver fish will be active and seeking feed mid water is best using maggots or pellet.

10.01.10
Happy New year to customers old and new. Lets hope we have another year of great fishing at LLyn Carfan.
Nothing to report on angling  due to frozen lakes.

25.12.09
I have nothing to report on the fishing side of things we have had no anglers during the very cold snap.  In the mean time I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Keep checking this site for updates on how the lakes are fishing as and when the weather improves.

07.12.09

Steve Wills from Pembroke Dock had a great days fishing recently taking a 21 lb grass carp from our bottom lake. He took a further 5 carp all around 2 to 6 pounds. Although I did notice he got broken on his last fish of the day. The grass carp really was a good catch at this time of the year. Normally I only see them during the warmer summer months and into late September.

Dave also from the the Dock proved me wrong the very next day when he took a 12 lb grass carp from our top lake. This the second grassy he has caught this winter. Dave who regularly visits with his mate Norman have had some very good days during November taking plenty of silver fish mixed in with several smaller carp to around 6 pounds.

15.11.09
We are now having less anglers as is very usual at this time of year. Those who do venture out are catching both carp and silver fish mainly in the deper water.
The recent Pembrokeshire Piscatorial match was won with a total wieght of 5.9 kilos as this was a silver  fish match it was not a bad dasy fishing.  None of the carp cught on the day were weighed in. There was also a dispute about the single eel caght on the day. Should it have been included in a silver fish match? Answers please via email.
Carp have also been taken from around the lilies, attracted by first laying a bed of pellets and continuing to feed regular handfulls of the same throughout the day.

Fish of the month for me was a 3lb roach taken by a Llanstephan angler.

18.10.09
I will just paste the email I received from Andy it gives a good indication of how the lakes are fishing at the moment.

Hi huw,

Its Andy here from Laugharne, just wondering what time is the earliest me and my friend could come down and fish from tomorrow morning? we can only fish untill around 1.30pm so would like to get a nice early start if we can.

We were hoping to be down with you by 7.15 and to be set up and fishing just before 8, if thats ok with you that is.

I had a fantastic day the last time a came with my lad, I ended up having 9 carp with the biggest going to around the 9lb mark, and the boy had 4 carp and some very nice roach. I found the fish to be in the deeper water, and the method feeder with  pellets on a hair rig or straight on the hook did the job for both of us, here's hoping for some more of the same tomorrow!!

Best wishes

Andy

07.10.09

The shorter days and colder nights are making the fishing more of a challenge. carp are now beging to lie far deeper in the water. This needs new tactics other than just chuck and hope.  A small bed of pellets in a semi circle a rods length or more out brings them in on the feed. Continue to feed small but regular amounts throught the day. Fish over the top with luncheon meat or even pellet on a hair rig.

20.09.09
Another good week with lots of both sliver fish and carp being caught.

Sunday has again proved a  great day, with numerous carp been caught up to 13lb.11oz. This evening after a very warm sunny day  the carp are actively taking biscuit and bread from the surface. Although through the day  small red blood worm pellets have attracted fish into the swim and a ledger laid close to the margins has brought the best results.

sam harris

Carp are being caught in good numbers and on a daily basis. Sam Haris form Newport caught fourteen in one session. He took 10 using floating bait and 4 on the bottom.
It is interesting that the day before Sam's session I had an angler tell me that he was being pestered by little fish while trying to float bread. Yet the day after another angler took over 10 of the top using dog biscuit.  Fishing of the top is an art and if you use bread it will attract the little fry as it readily breaks up in the water. A hard crust or dog biscuit or similar is a tougher bait and not so attractive to small fry. Also if the carp are not actively feeding on the top it is unlikely that you will attract them up.  Thundery weather will always put carp down in the water
.

Common Carp LLyn Carfan
10.08.09

Since an earlier report where I mentioned that none of our very large carp or grass carp have been caught. Today Kyran reported that on his last visit a couple of weeks ago, he took a 20 lb 6 oz grass carp from the bottom lake. Caught in the  evening using floating crust cast to an area where he had seen large fish cruising just under the water.
The weekend also saw many good catches with an angler  from Liverpool taking a 24 lb common. Having arrived Friday evening and staying in their motor home over the next three days he and his family took numerous carp.
Norman an angler from Pembroke Dock also reported and excellent day on the top lake. He got in amongst the bigger roach and continued to catch all day. he was using a waggler to the middle of the water where there is a reasonable depth. Luncheon meat cubes proved the best bait for the larger roach.

03.08.09
Plenty of carp being landed with the largest just 10lbs over the weekend. This was one of 10 caught by the same angler although his mate did break his rod (snapped in two) by a fish which was not even seen let alone landed.
The amount of rain we are having is effecting the fishing only in that, each day brings a different challenge. Normally by this time of the year the large carp bask on top of the water and floating baits work well. However I now find that they often lie in deeper water or come up around the margins to feed and return to the deeper parts.

25.07.09
Carmarthen anglers Alan  and Mike  both recently had  some fantastic sport fishing. Alan used a fly rod to take  eight carp ranging from 5 lb to 9 lb 12 oz.  A feat he repeated the following day this time landing 10 carp of similar weights. Mike using a feeder rod took two carp at 5 lbs.  These smaller carp are very lively when caught and make a for great sport when taken on lighter tackle.
There has also been some quality roach, over 2 lbs  caught recently. Mainly around the Lilly beds on both lakes.
All in all the waters are fishing very well but the big carp over 12lbs  are proving very elusive. Although I am getting reports of angler either having their line broken or having a hook straightened  on a more regular basis. Often it must be said that this is because  they  either try to bully the fish in or are unprepared and  not concentrating. Our carp when hooked will take of at speed and this if you are not used to it can be disconcerting. Anglers will then over compensate in their strike not allowing the fish to run. trying to turn them far to soon resulting in broken lines.

29.06.09
Sorry for the delay in updating.
The carp have been catching well over the last month  this is usual for June when the spawning has finished and warmer weather settled in.  Carp are feeding well in both lakes from both the top and bottom near the features and margins.  As yet this year we have not had any of our large grass carp landed so there is a challenge for someone to be the first of 2009. Grass carp are normally caught during the summer months on or just below the surface although as with all big fish some guile and a bit of good luck are also needed.
Today one lucky angler took several larger roach using carp tactics with a bigger cubes of luncheon meat for bait.  His largest being near two pounds in weight.

01.06.09

LLyn Carfan.has fished particularly well over the last couple of weeks with no angler leaving without catching fish , numerous carp landed were in double figures. Graham Barton took two common carp from the bottom lake one of 21lbs and the other 19lbs while ledgering at the deepest end. He used a carp mix in a feeder  and 8mm hook  pellets.  Grant a Carmarthen angler found the lily beds very challenging over the weekend loosing several fish to them even though he was fishing several yards away from the liies.  He did take two carp with the largest 12 pounds.

The top lake has also produced great fish with three local anglers taking over a dozen carp each.  Anglers who prefer silver fish only have also reported large bags of fish mainly on a waggler set up.

The carp have spawned during the warm weather and will now activley be seking feed so an ideal time to try Llyn Carfan.

Please Note:-  I have now banned the use of floating baits within 5 metres of the lily beds. This is because anglers are catching carp on the fringe or in the middle of the lilies and tryign to drag them out. Clearly this tactic is not good for the well being of the fish .

07.05.09.
Excellent fishing during the last week with most anglers reporting good catches. Carp are taking in both the deeper water and near the margins. Although surface baits are still difficult due to the cold winds. Roach and rudd are taking well where slightly bigger  baits are needed for the larger fish.
Reg  angler from Devon who was visiting for the first time was surprised at the quality of both carp and roach . Commenting on the fight given by the carp he said he was pleased he did not catch anything bigger than his best of the day , a 9 lb 7 oz  common carp. The carp was caught using a 5 meter pole with a simple waggler rig.

29.04.09
Reasonably good fishing during the last week. Although cooler weather has meant another change in tactics!  Where surface baits are not taking it is worth trying smaller chunks of luncheon meat or sinking pellets which are showing exceptionally good results! I would suggest that a little time is taken to set up your rig correctly also check the waters depth at your peg. Fishing at the correct depth is the difference between  a good or bad days fishing. A variety of baits are also very useful tool to have at your disposal.

21.04.09
Last Wednesday was a great success, LLyn Carfan played host to a around 15 youngsters who were given their first taste of fishing.  The members of the Cwmoernant Ponds project had hired Llyn Carfan and accommpanied the children. The environment agency supplied tackle and supported were needed. A big thank you to Roger Pratt for arranging that side of things.

Arriving at mid morning and having helped the young anglers to set up their rods it was not long before the first fish was caught.  The rods were all set up using a simple waggler method and size 16 hooks.  Maggots and sweet corn were used as bait and this tactic resulted in everyone catching numerous roach and rudd.

A barbecue lunch, teas coffee, drinks and biscuits  was provided by LLyn Carfan .

10.04.09

LLyn Carfan bottom lake is closed to the public on the 15th April 2009

We are hosting a teaching day for an angling group of disadvantaged children.

Top lake will be  open to the public as usual.

In general the fishing is mixed, which is expected due to the varying weather conditions. Hot one  cold the next, we have even had some night frost over the past weeks.
I cannot suggest a particular method of fishing but suggest you come prepared with a mixture of baits. You can then decide on the day if ledgering or float fishing would be more suitable .  I must add that even in challenging conditions very few anglers leave Llyn Carfan without a catch.

18.03.09
With lots of movement on the water the carp are now feeding well from near the surface. Two anglers who fished the bottom lake today, fishing on the surface were rewarded with over a dozen carp with weights from 9 to 14 lbs.  There is also plenty of signs of fish patrolling the margins an ideal place to lay ledgered bait. Roach and rudd are also being caught with good bags being reported. Good catches are also being reported from the top lake.

14.02.09

An interesting match today Peter Jordan took over 15 carp some to 9 lbs on a single pinky and size 20 hook. Now normally this would easily win a match! However today's match was silver fish only which really bemused Peter and very much amused the other contestants.  The match was one by Peter Tadman on 3 .1 kilos which included roach to a 1 lb caught on tares. Match was fished on the bottom lake.
Dave a regular from Pembroke who early in the week fished the top lake found that a number of small carp to 7 lbs also took smaller baits, he also took a large number  roach and rudd .

27.12.08
The fine cold weather has been a plus for the anglers who have ventured out over the festive season.
Maggots are a favorite bait for the roach and punched meat has tempted the carp to feed. One angler taking a dozen
carp up to 8lbs.  I would  recommend bring a good ground bait mix or loose pellets, which is needed to bring fish into your swim.
02.12.08.
It is very quiet on the lakes at this time of the year which makes it almost impossible to give an accurate account of how it is fishing.  The odd person who does venture out are taking occasional carp. Pleasure fishermen and match anglers will always take roach and rudd.  For those of you interested I am now taking bookings on our touring caravan pitches for 2008 please email me at llyncarfan@aol.com for further information
11 Nov 08
Quiet on the lakes at this time of the year but those who have ventured out are catching both carp and roach/rudd.
Sunday's Pembrokeshire Piscatorial's  match proved a good one for Peter Tadman who took 35 lbs of fish during the 5 hour match. Match tactics were used with a variety of bait. Carp are not feeding as much but are still active although lower in the water.  I must mention three Swansea anglers who during late September had a fantastic day on the bottom lake. Marcus Price took 12 carp between 6 to 9 lbs. Kim Molbec 10 carp between 6 to 10 pounds and Gavin Thomas 8 carp also between 6 to 10 pounds. (Sorry lads for the delay in posting but I lost your report card.)
27 th October 2008.
October has continued with fantastic fishing , although the carp are lower in the water a little patience and change in tactics will produce excellent results.
Jeremy McKenny a Carmarthen angler camping for a  long weekend stay at LLyn Carfan, Fishing into the early hours he managed to land 38 carp wich weighed between 5lb to 14 lbs.  All were taken on a ledger and the majority on Tutti fruti flavoured maze. An ideal bait for hair rigging.
Later in the week on a day visit Sam and Keith Griffith's of Port Tennant Swansea landed a bag of 16 carp ranging between 4lb to 10lbs. These again were caught using hair rig but this time using peanuts. Please note peanuts can only be used in moderation and must be well prepared. (I.E. well soaked until the nut has full expanded, under no circumstances should dried peanuts be used).
As normal roach and rudd are plentiful

Llyn Carfan continues to fish exceptionally well in late September sunshine. Carp are taking floating baits and also being caught on well presented baits from the bottom. Whitland Richard guest landed  a 12 pound mirror carp using a float rod and  with soft pellet hook bait. Terry (Mass) Davies who has plenty of time on his hands! He was delighted with his retirement present of a carp rod and reel which he put to good effect taking  this 11 pound common carp as pictured. A week later he landed a 17 pound common using ledgered  luncheon meat.
The Pembrokeshire Piscatorial's  club fished a match on Sunday the winner was Peter Jordan with 5.5 kilos, all silver fish. Second was Alan French with 4.9 kilos.

Terry mass davies 11 pound common

07.09. 08
September is again proving to be a great month for fishing with good catches being reported for both carp and silver fish, there has even been a gold fish of over 2 lbs caught.
Peter who visits regularly from his home at Pembroke had one his best days of the summer. Having been beaten to his usual peg he moved closer to the lilies in front of the bungalow. There he landed 10 carp to nine and a half pounds using a soft pellet as hook bait ledgered to the middle of the water. By the way I use the word summer because I have been reliant on calender months rather than the weather conditions!
Other carp have been landed up to 14 lbs from the surface with bread and roach to 2 lbs using a fast sinking pellet through a bed of mixed ground bait.

23.08.08
Weather conditions during August have been very trying with  rain almost every day so far. The hardy anglers who have ventured out have been rewarded with some excellent catches. That said there have been days when the fishing has been more challenging but this has only meant a change in tactics.  One of the best catches this week had been another 23lb grass carp. Nick who took this fish is no stranger to the large carp at LLyn Carfan having already taken several over 25lb in recent years.
Silver fish are catching well with the top lake showing good bags and quality size fish.
09.08.08
The fishing  is showing good results with quality carp, roach and rudd being taken in good numbers.
Although the weather has been changeable resulting in the need to change  tactics on a daily basis. Heavy thundery weather send the fish down in the water. during this time top or floating baits will show no results. However as soon as the sun comes out the carp happily start to patrol the surface and margins again.
Pleasure anglers are reporting good returns with mixed bags from a variety of methods using light tackle.
Camping and touring van facilities on site.

27.07.08
Good fishing with the carp showing numerous fish have been taken of this weekend . One of the best amongst then was a 23  pound grass carp. Nick Pritchard tempted the fish on to a single sweet corn on a size 16 hook with four pound line. Nick had spotted the fish cruising around and lay the slow sinking sweet corn a few feet in front of it, the grass carp took the bait from about a foot under the surface there was a 20 minute battle to land it.
A small  group of Llanelli anglers who fished over night at the weekend also had a very successful trip, catching over 30 carp between them. Although the average weight was only  around 8lb they were very surprised and commented on the very aggressive fight these naturally bred carp put up before finally being landed.

Fishing is really good the moment. carp are showing from both the bottom and top of the water. Lederging with peanuts brought a good results for a couple of anglers today, (please note peanuts must be well prepared or you will not be allowed to use them). Floating baits are also working with free running line the best method.
Roach and rudd are as always plentiful and being caught to a decent size.
The touring pitches are filling up fast so if you wish to bring a touring van please make sure you book in advance.

18.07.08
The fishing this last week has been very good, carp are showing in good numbers, from both floating and ledgered bait. It is worth taking a bit of time to walk around the water and see if there are signs of movement from the bigger carp. A wise angler will then check depths before deciding on what offering to attract the carp with, most baits will work if they have been well presented to the fish.  A word of warning during the summer months maggots will attract smaller fish which can become a nuisance. That said often smaller fish feeding will bring in larger ones to the area.
Common Carp

14.07.08
Despite the poor weather conditions there are plenty of fish being caught. Numerous carp being taken from around the lily pads. This area though can be difficult to fish as the carp bolt for the centre of the lilies making it virtually impossible land them. It is better to temp them out further from the pads, which gives the angler a better chance of netting the fish.
Smaller roach and rudd can be a problem at this time of year so its better to use large baits than the traditional maggot as an attractor and hook bait. That said there are some fine specimens be in caught resulting in great bags.

23.06.08
Good fishing conditions resulting in quality fish being caught. Including numerous carp that are being taken on a variety of methods.  Sunday saw one angler land 9 carp to 13 pounds mainly taken on floating dog biscuit close to margins.
Roach and Rudd are being caught to 2lbs with all the fish in excellent condition.

16.06.08  During June the fishing has been very good, spawning is now over and the carp are actively looking for feed. The warm weather is allowing floating baits to be used with some success. Although small roach and rudd will attack the baits if there are no carp present in the swim.  Largest carp so far this month 24.lb  by Lewys who was on a camping trip from Cardiff. (See picture section.)
Good quality and quantity of roach and rudd are being caught mainly using poles which seem the norm these days.  Although traditional anglers continue to enjoy the sport these the silver fish offer

Mathew may 08 grass carp

12.06.08

This week with fine weather has meant the carp have been spawning . Usually after spawning the carp tend to feed well leading to very good catches. Ledgered bait around the margins or floating bread or dog biscuit works very well.
Mathew a Saundersfoot  angler took full advantage of theses conditions to land this whopping grass carp by far the biggest fish he had ever caught. It fell to floating bread . It was one on many Mathew caught on his day  trip to Llyn Carfan

06.05.08
Llyn Carfan has fished particularly  well over last week and the bank holiday weekend. Notably Jacob Lloyd and Jake Mainwaring who bivvied up and were rewarded with a  total of 21 carp between them up to 9 pounds. They were successful on the bottom using fake maize and fake sweetcorn.
Another couple of lads who also bivvied up over the weekend found that both floating bread and ledgering halibut pellets brought good results. Taking over 25 fish between them with the largest 15.6 pounds falling to a hair rigged halibut pellet.

4 year old Amy Wilsons first attempt at fishing. Amy and her brother Scott (10 years old) accompanied by their parents had travelled from Llangennech  to Llyn Carfan on the Saturday of bank holiday weekend. Amy had a small pole set up for her with a size 16 hook and small waggler float.  She fished at 3ft depth. Using sweet corn as an attractor bait  and 4mm hook pellets she caught a total of 8 roach and rudd, without any assistance from the adults other than setting up and unhooking the fish.

Dont forget that we now have hook ups and hot showers for touring vans or campers.

20.04.08 Great week for fishing with carp showing on top as well as near the margins. Laying a chunk of luncheon meat along the side in around two feet of water can bring some amazing results. Roach and rudd are continuing to be caught with large bags being reported.
I also attended the launch of the Pembrokeshire fishiing guide this week. It is a very useful brochure giving locations of fisheries as well as angling clubs, games fishing locations and sea fishing information. If you want one please let me know. llyncarfan@aol.com

14.04.08
A bright weekend has brought out the anglers with good results, small carp are being caught up to 7lb. These are mainly on lighter lines and tackle, single hook baits after feeding an area with  4 to 6 mm pellets or similar ground bait. Roach and Rudd are still showing in good numbers using maggots to attract the fish in and slightly larger baits fished with waggler just of the swim bringing best results.
It is also worth mentioning that Llyn Carfan is now an affiliate of the Federation of Welsh Anglers which shows commitment to improving angling through Wales.
Dont forget that we now have hook ups and hot showers for touring vans or campers.

08.04.08 The Easter period has been a busy time  hence the late addition to this news item.
The mixed weather as usual has had a varying effect on the carp. During some sunny days they are happy to bask on the top and take bread etc. But the cold snap has quickly put them back into deeper water.  However the fishing has been successful although varied tactics may be the order of the day. Some nice quality smaller  carp have been caught which makes  useful practice for larger fish as spring appears.
With the days now much longer it is an ideal time to venture out and test you tackle roach and Rudd as usual are plentiful. Bring some maggots as an attractor bait but then move on to punched meat or small pellet for the quality fish that Llyn Carfan can provide.

05.03.08

The fishing has been very mixed this last couple of weeks and for the first time ever the top lake has out fished the bottom lake. Carp to 12lb 10oz have been caught by Mick a Pembroke Dock angler who along with his mates have had several good sessions recently. Fishing on carp pellets while  using a feeder to attract has brought them reasonable results.
Lets hope the weather continues to improve and some warmer water allowing the fish to come to the surface once again.

17.02.08
Last week has seen bright cold start to the days  but things got better as the day progressed. Several carp caught on the bottom lake, attracted by pellet and caught with a mixture of baits over the top. One method which brought good results this week was bread fished of the bottom.
A  party of Liverpool anglers who had booked  four night stay in their  a large camper van  enjoyed the week both on fishing front and weather wise.  Both adults and children caught fish mainly smaller carp using a variety of methods. As you would expect at this time of the year the carp tend to stay in the deeper water.

10.02.08
Todays match was a silver fish only match and won by Peter who weighed in 9.5 kilos closely followed by Peter Tadaman with 8.9 kilos. Several carp were caught but not weighed. General fishing is very good  the recent warm weather helping.  Well worth a visit at this time of year as carp are beginning to become active again.

07.02.08 Carp have been showing over the last few weeks mainly to bottom feeders. With the days now drawing out anglers are beginning to to venture out with good results.

Matches have fished well considering the weather through January. The latest Pembrokeshire Piscatorial Match last weekend was won by Mark with a weight of 9 kilos this was all  silver fish. Many small  carp were caught but not weighed in as it was another silver fish only match.
Carp have been showing over the last few weeks mainly to bottom feeders. With the days now drawing out anglers are beginning to to venture out with good results.

01.01.08

Happy New Year. And what a start its been. The only angler who ventured out this morning was rewarded with a fantastic days fishing .  After  7.30 am start by 12 noon he had landed 10 carp to around 8 lbs. These were taken on ledgered salami  on hair rigs. Fishing in the deep water end .
The last Sunday of 2007 also provided some good fishing for the Pembrokeshire Piscatorial Fur and Feather Match., a silver fish only match. As is sods law several carp, were also caught during the 6 hour match. The eventual winning weight was 9 kilos.

10.12.07
The bad  weather has meant fewer fishing the lakes at Llyn Carfan.  Those who have ventured out have been rewarded with some excellent roach and rudd. Carp continue to be caught although they tend to be smaller fish up to 4 kilos.
Last Sunday we had the Pembrokeshire Piscatorial match. The eventual winner was Brett with 11 kilos of fish including 4 carp.  The swim that Brett drew was by the pampas grass at the corner point around the lilies. He found that punched luncheon meat did not attract any bites. Changing to larger cut pieces attracted carp and larger roach in to the swim.

16.11.07
The very fine weather we have had over the recent weeks, has meant that, anglers have continued to enjoy some great fishing at Llyn Carfan. Dan Henderson is one such angler who has proved that the  carp continue to take surface bait, even in colder weather conditions.  yesterday after a morning frost, which became a sunny day. He took three common carp from the bottom lake. All were taken on floating bread.
Dan and his mate, have been regular visitors over the last few weeks and to my knowledge they have never had a blank day.

06.11.2007.  This is a copy a a letter which was sent to me at Llyn Carfan from a very happy customer who caught a very large carp, his first. As he had forgoten a camera we were happy to oblige by taking a picture.

A thank you letter from a very happy customer to Llyn Carfan

Cwmoernant Ponds Project, recently booked one of the lakes Llyn Carfan for day. The group, who specialise in introducing young people into angling, used the day to  give a coaching session to a dozen young boys.
All participants were shown and encouraged to set up the tackle and learn the basics of coarse fishing. Using a simple waggler method and bait which was supplied at the fishery all of the group caught fish during the day.
Llyn Carfan also provided a barbecue lunch of beef burgers and hot dogs for all children helpers and coaches.
Any one wishing to book one of the lakes for private use for the day can do so by contacting Huw on 01994240819. Use of a pre booked lake is not limited to groups. If you want to take advantage of sole use for  chasing 30 pound carp or big bags of roach and rudd you may do so. Lunch, tackle, bait etc can be provided.

Pembrokeshire Piscatorial Sunday Match. Top weight was 9.8 kilo won by Jim. All anglers reported good weights and a very enjoyable day. Those who chanced their arm fishing early for carp were disappointed because on the day it was the roach and rudd anglers who did best with some very good quality roach being caught.
This weekend Dave Williams a visitor to the area and on his first visit to Llyn Carfan fished with a pole and 25 elastic close to lilies on the point. He was rewarded with several carp, the largest being 18 lbs. Four others were in double figures and nothing smaller than 7 lbs.  He used various baits including chopped worm as loose feed and halibut pellet as hook bait.

Don't forget if you wish to camp or bivvy up we can now offer hot showers and electric hook ups for touring and camper vans. Make the Most of the last Month for hook ups we will be closed until March for Caravans. Fishing as usual through the winter months.

10.10.07

As usual late September again produced the biggest carp of the season. Bob a regular from Llanmileo  caught a whopping 31 lb 4 oz common carp. Taken on a very simple method of a small ledgered feeder filled with bread paste which included a secret ingredient and using bread paste on a size 10 hook. Bob was ecstatic as this is by far the biggest fish he has ever caught.
The same weekend Rob Adshead from Whitland caught 10 carp including 2 x 9 lbs and 1 just short of 11 lbs. They were taken on either luncheon meat or floating crust. His son John also caught 6 carp with the heaviest being 9.5 lbs.

08.09.2007 Another great week for carp with several angler reporting double figure fish. Top amongst them was a 27lb grass carp taken on floating bread.  Graham Kent took a 24 lb common on luncheon meat near the lilies on bottom lake. William Diamond  a very promising young Whitland angler was delighted to break his record with a 12 lb carp again on floating bread near the reeds. (picture attached)

02.09.2007
It has been a very good week for carp fishing at Llyn Carfan, we have had reports of several large carp being caught. The largest being a grass carp of 27 lbs caught on floating bread. (September always produces a very  large carp or two).
The sense of achievement of the  angler who caught the grass carp was nothing compared to the excitement James felt as he landed this 5 lb carp (picture above) on is first ever fishing trip.  He used a single sweet corn on a size 14 hook and a waggler float. Rod and tackle had been hired from Llyn Carfan and a small amount of tutition given.

!5lb common taken at Llyn carfan top lake
Just one of our commons taken with lucheon meat fished  using a  waggler over depth.

29.08.07 For the second night in a row  we had reports of over 20 carp being caught. Two Port Talbot anglers on a night session, were delighted with their nights fishing.  Using similar methods of meat and peperrarmi on a hair rig brought remarkable results.  all fish were commons again to around 10 lb.

Graham Kent who is a regular visitor to Llyn Carfan was amazed to catch a 3 lb 2 oz eel out of the bottom lake.

25.08.07
Chris and Ed Two local night anglers, made the most of the nice weather and booked an overnight session at Llyn Carfan. As dusk fell the carp really started to feed resulting in a sleepless night for them both. The 20 odd carp to 10 lbs certainly made up for it. They ledgered  hair rigged pellets during the night and also brought results with floaters the following morning  .

Day anglers have also been busy with good catches being reported, Bob who has a caravan near by took 8 Carp on Saturday. His ledering tactics worked well using his own mixture of paste.

15.08.2007.  Mathew who caught this 12lb carp. He fished sweetcorn close to lilly pads making the catch even more memorable. Carp in that area are notrious for diving into the lillies and breaking your line or throwing the hook

Mathew carp llyn carfan
08.08.07. We are uneffected with ther recent outbreak of foot and mouth. All outdoor activities continue as normal.
The fine weather continues with an inceasing number of anglers on the bank. The  fishing is as always prolific.
Large carp tease anglers by basking on top of the water to take advantage of the sunshine. Those anglers who try to tempt them with floating baits enjoy the challenge of the carp showing interest but turning away from the hooked bait. They are quite happy to take freebies though!

LLyn Carfan today in conjunction with the Environment Agency hosted a group of less able anglers.  This is a concerted effort to bring angling to all.  With the help of Peter Tadman and Roger Pratt the group was shown how to tackle up, taught about water safety, how to handle the fish with care. And the best bit actual fishing and catching fish. A mixture of baits were used but maggots proved the most successful even if it did mean compromising on size of the fish.  Each angler was presented with a certificate which rounded off a very enjoyable day for them and the fishery.

04.08.07
Great weekend fishing with good numbers of carp being caught. Ledger seemed to be the best tactic with hair rigs and pellet proving very effective.
The large roach are very active also but you need to adjust your tactics. One  midlands angler had excellent results by using  a 5 BB waggler with the shots just around the float.  One other BB was place about 12 inches from the hook. This takes the bait through the smaller fish.  This tactic also works well for carp but  you need to check the depth on your swim before starting to fish.

01.08.07.
Thankfully the weather has improved and we are now getting normal weather for the end of July. Both lakes are fishing exceptionally well. With one angler taking over 35 carp in a single day this would equate to 200 pounds of fish. Fishing a very simple technique, light lines and where care had been taken in presenting the bait correctly. A mixture of surface bait and  margin fishing gave him one of the best days ever at this popular fishery.
Sliver fish as normal are showing in great numbers. Larger ones taking bigger carp baits. Maggots are fine for younger members but beware it can lead to lots of smaller fish. The tench in the  top lake are showing good weight gains with a 4lb .6 oz fish landed recently.
Our touring caravan pitches are proving very popular with a number now booked for the season. Please enquire before travelling if you wish to hook up.

14.07.07 The weather contiues to be very changable with some exceptionally wet days.
However this did not put off Vic a member of the Pembrokeshire Piscatorials, who fished using a 13 metre pole with a drop shot waggler. Laying a bed of 8 mm expanding pellet close to the bank. He then fished over the top with a 6mm hard pellet on a rubber band and size 10 hook. Within 3 hours he had landed over 50lb of carp and further 10 pounds of silver fish. The largest carp being 14.6lb.

Another regular fishermen Dia (badger)  had a very busy day on the carp. He varied tactics  from laying a ledgered  meatball just beyond a  ledge at the bottom lake  to floating dog biscuit. between him and his fellow angler they landed 17 carp with the largest at 13lb.

These are just a sample of the fish being caught if anyone who has fished Llyn carfan has any  pictures or reprots on the fishery please forward them to me.

01.07.07
The Pembrokeshire Piscatorial club fished a match  today with good results being weighed in. Fishing was made more difficult due to the very heavy showers and strong breeze. The eventual winner was Mark with 22 lb of mixed fish but predominately roach. (must have been his sun glasses that made the difference).  Others in the match all reported good catches including a number of small carp to 5 lb taken on the pole.

30.06.07
Despite the very wet weather Tom and his friend both local to Llyn Carfan had a very good days fishing . Both landing over 8 carp each with the largest around 9 lbs.   The carp were bottom feeding  probably due to the extraordinary amount of rain we have had recently. Carp in particular will head for deep water and safe banks when there is heavy rain or thunder about.

24.06.07
Three Llanelli anglers who booked a night session at Llyn Carfan were not disappointed with the total of over 20 carp between them.  Various sizes were recorded with the top weight of 12 pounds. The methods changed between ledgered meat in the dark hours and floating bread as daylight arrived.
Pleasure anglers who fish for the silver fish are always pleased with the results they can achieve at this fishery.

18/06/07 June has been a very mixed month weather wise, from some very hot days to very very wet days. Also thunder storms which always put the carp down in the water.
However  fish of all species are continuing to be caught on a very regular basis.  Some fine carp to about 9 lbs were caught this morning using a fake double sweet corn  on a hair rig.
I wonder about theses fake baits. What effect do they have on the fish if they are dislodged and swallowed? Answers please, use the reply button.
Handling the fish with care is paramount at Llyn Carfan  at all times.  Where though do you draw the line at various tactics and methods?  I was approached last week by an angler who informed me of his concern about another angler. The second angler was using a floating bait very close and almost on top of the Lilly leaves (pads).  When he had a take the carp would invariably rush straight into the lilies.  This would mean virtually dragging them out or loosing the fish.

Now I must confess the  angler who brought this to my attention had a very valid point. Although even fishing in the middle a wily carp will still head straight for the lilies and cover the afford.

I have also had complaints from anglers about stalking carp. This is were the angler walks the bank in search of activity and then will drop a line just in front of the carp.  This method can brings good results but can also annoy other anglers furhter along the bank hoping the fish will find their bait or baited spot.  I am seriously considering banning this practise at Llyn Carfan. I already have a rule that if you vacate your peg and try this method you must remove ALL your other rods and tackle away from the bank.
Your views would be gratefully appreciated . Please use the reply button.

The environment agency has circulated a letter which informs fisheries that KHV DISEASE a virus is now a unobtainable disease. In short this means that any fishery owner or fish farm owner has by law got to report any fish showing signs of this very contagious disease. Any angler can also report any suspect fish they see or find while fishing. They may call 08708 506506 to report any incident they find.  There is a little more information on the forums section.

In the mean while the advise given is as follows-------Ensure responsible angling practices

Minimise fish stress as much as possible. Use unhooking mats when handling large fish and enforce keepnet limits at match waters. In very warm weather, good handling is critical and fish should not be retained.

Dirty and wet fishing tackle (nets and unhooking mats etc.) could spread diseases, including KHV. There are two main ways of disinfecting fishing tackle. The first is to thoroughly dry equipment after fishing, preferably in direct sunlight. If this is not practical, then a chemical disinfectant can be used. These include iodine-based disinfectants (iodophores), or Virkon® S. For advice on disinfectants, talk to the Environment Agency.

Disinfectant dips for nets can be used, but make sure the chemicals used are fresh and anglers use them correctly. For the best possible protection from disease, only allow anglers to use nets or unhooking mats supplied by the fishery.

"

ANY ANGLER VISITING LLYN CARFAN WILL HAVE TO SHOW THAT THEIR LANDING NETS AND LANDING MATS  HAVE BEEN PROPERLY DRIED AND OR DISINFECTATED. I TRUST YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHY  THIS IS NESSESARY
".

10.06.07 The warmer weather has returned and carp have spawned. As usual after spawning the fish feed well. Carp have been plentiful with some good returns for all anglers. Notably,  Steve Reynolds a Carmarthen angler who tempted 5 carp to 8lb from the top lake. All carp were caught on floating dog biscuit this method was also successful in many large roach he landed.
Helen Smith another  Carmarthen angler also had a good return using sweetcorn and bread on the bottom lake her biggest on the day was a 9lb 6oz common carp. Much to Helen's dismay a much  larger carp broke her line on the last cast to the day.
Trisha who has taken advantage of the touring van pitches at Llyn Carfan took over a dozen carp during the weekend the largest of which topped 12lb.  A shallow bait in the margins worked well along with floating pellet.

Silver fish can be caught using larger baits during the warm weather.  Anglers who remain with maggot or small worms are pestered with small fish.  One method to avoid this is to feed an area, then fish a heavier weighted bait a little distance away from the feed.  This method takes  the bait  to deeper water and hopefully some better quality of fish.

01/06/07
Harry Wimbush 11 pound common
Great week for all species of fish. The weather has been favourable although a little cold for May.  Roach an Rudd to 2 lbs are being caught with ease using bread paste and corn. Punched meat is another great bait for bigger fish. Maggots although very handy to have, do attract very small fish at this time of year.  I also found this to be the case when I put a small worm on, the size of roach fell considerably.
Carp continue to lay deeper in the water which requires baits to be weighted  a little heavier to get to them. The results can be very pleasing with several double figure fish showing in the last week.  Notably a 11 pound common caught by a Harry Wimbush a 11 year old  Ramsgate angler. Harry and his dad had made a return visit to Llyn Carfan after a successful fishing trip here in 2006.

23.05.07
Pontiates angler David James and his friend returned last Sunday to have another great day at Llyn Carfan taking over 130 pound of carp between them. David caught 10 carp between 8 and 10.5 lbs but his friend takign the day with a whoping 21lb grass carp. one of 6 carp he captured on the day.

18.05.07 Carp continue to be caught at all sizes despite the weather turning for the worst. Many carp are now back bottom feeding and taking closer to the margins. Baits vary depending on the day but it is always worth  packing the old favorite luncheon meat or similar. Roach and rudd will always catch use maggots to attract the fish in and fish off it using punched luncheon meat for bigger fish.

05.05.07 A change it the weather with overcast cooler conditions.  David James from Pontiates has had another very successful day, this time on our top lake taking 10 carp  to 8 lbs.  Floating pellets has attracted the majority of his catch's.

Neil is another angler who has returned to the top lake today to try and better the 14.14oz common carp he caught on his last visit.  He tempted the carp on a luncheon meat and sweetcorn double hook bait  fished by ledger  over a small bed of the same bait which he had placed about 10 feet out of the bank in 6 ft of water.

02.05.07  For those of you who wish to try the art of floating a bait on top of the water for carp and indeed very large roach. This is the ideal weather conditions. The water is clear and fish are lying close to the top. bread is an old favorite but dog biscuit and lately even floating specialised carp pellets can be bought over the counter.
Methods vary from straight hook baits to hair rigs and rubber bands. Super glue is another method used to attach bait to hooks. Come along and give it a go.

29/04/07

Great catches reported all weekend. Match fishing tactics worked well for smaller carp up to 8 lb during Sunday. Eric Rimmer of Pembrokeshire piscatorial's enjoyed a day off match fishing by taking silver fish on a pole all day.

Adam a Pembroke angler who following a very good day session at Llyn Carfan decide to try a night session. He was rewarded with 11 carp two into double figures taken on ledgered fake sweetcorn.

In general it has been a good fishing week with all visitors to the fishery reporting catches.

23.04.07

The weekend weather was favourable very warm on Saturday and cooler with stiff breeze on Sunday. This did not deter many anglers from visiting Llyn Carfan. Generally results were good, Match tactics worked well on the bottom lake during Saturday with smaller carp and roach and rudd being caught throughout the day. Larger carp fell to bigger baits and more sophisticated tactics. One of the most notable and enjoyable catches was an eight pound common, caught by *8 year old Sophie who was on a camping trip with her dad. WELL DONE SOPHIE.
As a matter of interest her dad who is a big carp fisherman, failed to land what he called a beast of a fish during Saturday night. Having taken him to the bottom the fish simply would not rise and eventually won there battle by breaking the line.
Sunday continued to fish well with carp to 9 lb showing and as usual plenty of silver fish from both lakes.

19.04.07
Jill and her husband who had travelled from Swansea found they had the bottom lake to themselves. Changing continuing to switch tactics between a float rod and had a pole with a dapper on brought numerous fish of size and species throughout the day. They both agreed it had been a brilliant day's fishing and will be returning soon..

15.03.2007
Some fine fish showing again today with the  top catch  an 18.5lb grass carp from our bottom lake, taken on floating pellet. Roach and rudd again plentiful on both lakes.

April gras carp 18.8 lbs

14.03.07
Weather today has been truely remarkable for an April day, very warm and sunny. This has brought an adunance of fish from several anglers. Top among the catches was a 3lb.4 oz rudd from regular angler Graham Kent. This fish was taken by flaoting dog biscuit. Graham was stunned that a rudd of that quality lived in the top lake. It certainly made his Easter in West Wales.

Trish one of our regular lady angler caught several carp from the top with dog biscuit. All her fish were in super condition and very lively.

As evening fell to further carp were being taken by floating bread . Whitland angler Bobby Joe caught this 9lb carp with single sweet corn and waggler. His friend Dempsy used floating bread to caatch at least 3 other carp but none matched this one in size. Bobby Joe with 9lb common

With  the weather  continuing to be sunny and warm during the day the fish are all very active, many carp cruising after about mid morning. The nights continue to cool the water down so cold water techniques are still needed early and late in the day. Valleys girl and her husband  have visited and returned some nice catches, Commons to 9lb along with decent roach.
Another notable fish was a 10.5lb common caught by a young man from Watford during their Easter break to Pembrokeshire. Photo in picture section.

05.04.07
After a very chilly start with ground frost, the weather warmed up considerably by mid morning. It was in this bright sunshine that Graham Kent landed  his biggest fish to date. After a very hard battle a whopping 26.5lb common carp taken  from the top pond. He caught using his favourite method of slow sinking (large )pellet . The effort took a marked effect on Graham who after his exertions with this hard fighting fish, had to sit quietly for over an hour  to recover.  Angler's please not we are not insured against over vigour's fighting fish. If in doubt about your health. Please stick to the smaller fish.
A variety of smaller fish carp and roach were caught on the same day at our bottom lake.

03.04.07  The weather is colder and overcast today around 50%f , a marked change from very hot sunny weather yesterday. It was a whooping 67%f in the shelter.

Graham Kent a regular at Llyn Carfan enjoyed his morning fishing on our top lake. Taking a 17lb common using floating pellet close to bank. He was also delighted with the very large roach up to 3 lbs tempted to the same pellets, this time he changed the method slightly by slowly sinking the pellets in deeper water.

31.03.07 Almost into April and hopefully a run of decent weather. This is a good time of year as the fish will be showing more of themselves on top of the water, catching the warmer sun . Carp in particular enjoy basking near the surface where the angler can,at least, see some of the big fish. Now catching them that is more of a challenge.
All species are being caught with carp taking surface and ledgered bait. Roach and rudd can be attracted with maggot and caught using a variety of small baits on 16 or 18 hooks.
Thanks to all who visited us at the show, we hope to see you at our fisheries soon.

27.03.07 It is always nice to have feed back from anglers. Here is one from Martin who I
have already mentioned in this news section.

"Hi Huw,
Thank you for a great weekend of fishing. Weather was great and the fish were lively so what more could i ask for.  Attached are the photo's of some of the fish i caught this weekend. I caught 8 carp on sat. Two were 8 Lb, 2 were 6 Lb and the others were 3Lb or so. Sunday I fished up the top lake and caught 3 up there the biggest being 8 Lb and the others were 3 or so. Moved to the bottom lake in the afternoon and caught 2. One being 9Lb and the other 4Lb. Many roach were caught on both days but did notice that the roach were not going on sunday afternoon after the fishing competition but i expect this is due to the amount they caught.  Overall an excellent weekend."

24.03 07 Saturday, a very nice day with warm sunshine although  cool breeze.  Following his visit to the Go fishing Show. Martin Basset decided to renew his acquaintance with Llyn Carfan, he had previously fished the lakes as a youngster. His trip was extremely productive after a 7am start fishing for roach and rudd. These species were plentiful to such an extent that by mid morning he had switched to carp.
He landed  8 in total 2 x 8lbs, 2 x 6lbs and the others were 3 to 4lbs.
Using a fruit flavoured soft pellet as bait.

18.03.07  Sunday a far colder day with sleet shower and high wind chill, although water temperature remains surprisingly warm.
Hardy carp anglers have been catching good quality up to 9 lbs carp on floating bread. The bread was cast some distance from the angler which is a difficult feat to master. But it does bring good results.

17.03.07.
Just in case your confused what day the date represents. It's the day Wales beat England at Cardiff.
Although noticeably cooler today some nice carp have been caught. One I saw landed was a 5lb mirror carp, taken by William Diamond on floating bread. This was his second of the day having failed, after a 15 minute battle to net the first . It shows the importance of having a large landing net at al times when fishing for the carp.

15.03.07
The warmer weather during the last few days  (54%f yesterday) has livened the fish up with good catches being reported. Methods vary from angler to angler, poles are favoured for roach and rudd. Carp anglers are still trying bottom ledgers or hair rigs with peperammi showing good results.  Forecast for next week is a sudden drop in temperature so bring some maggots and light line.
Camping and touring caravan facilities are now open for 2007. Hard standing and electric hook ups available for vans and campers.  Tent space availalble. All pitches are within 50yds of our bottom lake. Hot showers. Disabled access . call 01994240819.

Llyn Carfan. Two fine carp at 10lbs and 10.5lbs respectively were landed today by Frankie Storer, he tempted the carp firstly with bread paste and fished just below the surface. the second carp fell to a meatball on a ledger.

08.03.2007. Llyn Carfan
The bright day brought out many anglers who all enjoyed the warmer spring like conditions. Weather in Pembrokeshire was 50F.  The fish were also very active although it was still advisable to fish with light lines and a smaller hook size.
Notable catches was by  Pembroke lady angler, Rosemary, a  who took 5 carp to 6lbs on a float rod and sweetcorn bait. Her husband failed to match this catch but did take a 5lb carp on ledgered sweetcorn and several roach to half a pound. Other catches were reported on ledgered bacon grill meat.

Sunday's match at Llyn Carfan was a silver fish only match. Although carp were being caught they were not recorded in final weights. A windy day proved challenging for the anglers.

The final results were a modest  4.05 kilos  by Peter Jordan . M Close fishing the next peg along  was second with 3.9 kilos including a half kilo Roach. Third was R.Repton on 3.5kilos.

All anglers weighed in which showed again how even on difficult days this  fishery can produce catches for all.

All anglers weighed in which showed again how evn on difficult days this  fishery can produce catches for all.

08.09.2007. Another week of very good fishing several anglers have report numerous carp into double figures. top catches include a 27lb grass carp on floating bread. Graham Kent also took another carp at 24lb from arounf the lillies using luncheon meat bait. William Diamond also landed a 12lb carp his best so far on floating bread near to reeds at the far end of the bottom lake.
